Lapham’s Quarterly Returns in 2025

Lapham’s Quarterly, the esteemed journal of history and ideas founded by Lewis H. Lapham, is set to embark on a new chapter in 2025 under the stewardship of Bard College and its Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities. This transition comes following the passing of Lewis H. Lapham in July 2024, ensuring the continuation of his unique vision.

Established in 2007, Lapham’s Quarterly has distinguished itself by presenting historical and literary texts to illuminate contemporary issues. The Hannah Arendt Center will assume responsibility for the Quarterly’s assets, including its extensive archives and intellectual property, integrating the journal into Bard’s commitment to fostering critical thought and public discourse. This partnership aims to preserve an important intellectual legacy, securing the Quarterly’s future in an era where historical context is increasingly vital.

A significant aspect of this new stewardship is Bard College’s dedication to fulfilling Lapham’s wish to distribute free copies of the Quarterly to incarcerated individuals through the Bard Prison Initiative. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to knowledge and literature.

Furthermore, Columbia University has acquired Lewis H. Lapham’s personal archives, and the Hawthornden Foundation will establish a permanent tribute at the Quarterly’s former office, showcasing his journals and personal artifacts. These parallel efforts serve to honor Lapham’s profound contributions to American letters and the lasting impact of his work.
